Nylon is a very durable carpet fiber for heavy traffic in the home. Homeowners usually choose nylon for a family room or living room. Polyester is more suited for lower traffic areas in the house, such as bedrooms. It, too, is a high-quality fiber for the home. Resistance to stains
Nylon must be treated in the factory with a particular chemical that makes it stain resistant. For example, a spilled glass of wine will soak into untreated nylon. However, it will not penetrate polyester. Polyester is a hydrophobic fiber that is naturally resistant to stains. It is also eco-friendly, as it is made from recycled water bottles. So it is less costly of the two fibers.
Resistance to crushing
Nylon proves to be the more resilient of the two fibers. After a nylon carpet is walked on, it will return to its original form rather than stay crushed down. The same is true of heavy furniture and electronics on nylon. Remove them, and you can’t tell they were there. Softer polyester is less resilient. So it is more appropriate for bedrooms and other rooms that don’t receive a lot of foot traffic.
Resistance to fading
Polyester, with its higher luster appearance, has a considerably more expansive selection of colors than nylon. Polyester carpet comes in bright and vibrant colors, whereas nylon comes in matte colors. Both are resistant to fading. Yet, the carpet manufacturers recommend that you keep your carpet from direct sunlight.
