Is natural or synthetic carpet flooring better for me?

Fibers are the material from which rug yarns are made. They are typically broken into two categories: natural and synthetic.

Both are good choices. Your decision will depend upon how much you value specific characteristics.

About wool carpeting

Natural fibers make up less than five percent of all residential carpets. Wool is the only one used for broadloom. Others, like sisal, coir, seagrass, or jute, are appropriate only for smaller mats.

Wool is very durable; it's one of the most recommended for homes with pets. It's also highly soil-resistant. It has natural oils with tiny scales that flick off the dirt. It is absorbent, so wipe spills immediately.

Wool is soft and luxurious and is also pricier than the others.

About synthetics

This soft surface floor covering is often considered the more practical choice. They are less expensive than others and are more stain-resistant.

Rugs made with these fibers can also be very soft. Today, yarns are thinner, resulting in an enhanced velvety feeling.
Nylon accounts for 50% of residential carpets. It is ultra-strong and resilient with good stain resistance, ideal for very heavily trafficked floors.

Polyester is known for superior stain resistance. It’s best for floors in moderately busy rooms.

Olefin (polypropylene) is budget-friendly and durable. Triexta is known for strength and permanent stain resistance built into the fiber.
